My first visit to the Abbey

My first visit to the Abbey was in July 1951, a seven year old taken by the hand by my father the length of Abbey Street to see the remains of the theatre destroyed by fire the night before. My recollection is of looking through a window at the women furiously stitching costumes for brave and determined staging of the ‘Plough’ that night in the Peacock. There were very many subsequent visits over the years but none quite as special.
